The former Post Office for the unincorporated community of Holmes Mill in Harlan County KY.  A local told us it was shut down about four years ago.  This is on Hwy. 38, west of the large, and dormant, Jericoal complex nearer the Lee County VA line.

Wallins School

This school is still open and has an enthusiastic booster website.
These pictures were taken in early June, 2014, as we rolled through Wallins Creek in Kentucky.
First, the school, then the stone that has been erected outside:

More Kentucky Post Offices, one for sale.

Here we go!  First, it’s the formal, official post office in Harlan. The cornerstone (‘way on the left corner) states: A W Mellon Secretary of the Treasury James A Wetmore Acting Supervising Architect 1931.   Harlan first got a post office in 1828, but it had to be named Harlan – after an early family – rather than Mount Pleasant, as it was known at the time.  That name conflicted with another location in the state. So, the song would have been “Goin’ Back to Mount Pleasant”?

Marrowbone KY Fire Trucks

Marrowbone is north of Elkhorn City KY on 460/80 between Draffin and Millard.  Wiki says it’s been known at Regina, but I see Regina a couple of miles to the east.  These trucks were sitting outside the Volunteer Fire Department.  We’d smelled wood smoke coming in and saw a haze of smoke.  This is why I didn’t get a picture of an unusual truck parked in their station bay.  Just as I walked up, the volunteer fireman on duty closed the door and was hurrying off.  He said he had to go help the others fight the forest fire up the road.

This first one is a Sutphen, maybe 1993 or so.  Major unit.

McRoberts Elementary School

McRoberts Community, outside Jenkins KY, has been around since 1912 or so.  It was a Consolidated Coal town.  The original McRoberts Elementary came into being around a century ago.  This incarnation, as such, was closed last year, according to a news story on a local TV station.

Some Kentucky Post Offices

We were up in the Jenkins, Fleming-Neon, McRoberts (and Hemphill – already posted) area last Sunday.  I found some post offices.  McReynolds has two!  Mail a letter, keep the Postal Service going (my granddad was a postman).

This is Cromona KY Post Office:
