Closplint KY

Well, the Post Office at Closplint, anyway.  Here’s the story: in 1926 Clover Splint Coal Company started a mining operation in this area and named the nascent town Clover Splint.  When the Postal Service decided to set up an office here in 1928, they thought that Clover Splint was a little too long for their taste, so they shortened it down to Closplint.  “Splint” is a type of hard, bituminous coal that burns at a high temperature.  You can’t make coke from it, though. Any kind of coke.

“Highsplint” is just a hop, skip and a jump away.  So’s Louellen and Louellen Lake.  More on those later.
