Jeremiah KY


The Post Office at Jeremiah KY, about 6 miles from Whitesburg.  Rennick (“Kentucky Place Names”) states that “Jeremiah” was Jeremiah P. Dixon, the first Postmaster in this area in 1884.  Rennick goes on to say that the man was known as “The Prophet”, because his middle name was actually “Prophet”.  He was named, of course, for the prophet, who is credited for “The Book of Lamentations”.  Long, mournful complaints are known as “jeremiads”.  I read that the Puritans loved them some jeremiads…
