Old Coal Mine Adits and Fan Buildings

These are all located at the head of Straight Hollow near Dante VA.  This was a coal mine complex that opened sometime before 1912 and gradually died in the late 50s.  It was operated by Clinchfield Coal Company.
This is a 1914 adit.  It’s hard to see, but before the “1914” is a capital “E” and, on the other side, is a capital “R”.  I have no idea what that’s all about.

This is the 1955 adit.  There’s another one just a few yards to the left of this one, but it was heavily covered by dormant kudzu.

A very early fan building (miners use big fans to keep air circulating in deep mines)

This one is more recent, probably from the 40s or so.

Appalachia VA

Remember those four big coal silos on the left as you came into Appalachia from Big Stone?  Incredibly, they’re gone.

This was taken from the overpass, looking toward the highway to Big Stone.

Lonesome Pine Drive In

The old Lonesome Pine Drive-In outside St. Paul VA.  Look!  The screen’s still there (in 2011)!

To the eternal memory…

Lake Keokee (ice, baby, ice)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This 92-acre lake near Keokee VA was impounded in 1975 and is owned by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.  This was taken from the nominal recreation area and boat launch.  You can’t see them very well in this picture, but a few trees, now quite dead, protrude from the lake.

Harlan Water & Ice

This is the Harlan Water & Ice Co

This is now the Harlan KY municipal water works.  I wonder if, at one time, this was a private business and the small strip below the big letters spelled “incorporated”.
